Universities that teach the next genera- tion of teachers have a special focus on their mission. The Chico Normal School opened its doors in 1889 to 90 students for the specific purpose of “training and education of teachers in the art of instructing and governing the public schools of the state.” Eighty-three years later, in 1972, the institution became California State University, Chico (now commonly called “Chico State”). Chico State offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and options and serving more than 17,000 students.
