HIPAA, SMS, and Artera
Artera, we specialize in last mile communication to patients — helping healthcare organizations engage with their patients in a compliant manner. Artera’s platform allows HIPAA-covered organizations to send and receive protected health information (PHI) through either “secured” or “unsecured” standard SMS messages. By default, all messages are sent securely, and users must manually override the setting in order to send unsecured text messages. Secured messages are encrypted and remain encrypted in transit and at rest. The patient receives secure messages via a text link that allows the patient to view the message in a web portal after the patient validates his or her identity, and may choose to respond to the message either within the portal or by SMS.
