Retailers’ climate road map: Charting paths to decarbonized value chains

Retailers contribute significantly to global emissions, particularly through Scope 3 emissions from product value chains. These emissions, generated in upstream and downstream activities like sourcing, production, and consumer use, account for 98% of the sector's emissions. To meet decarbonization goals, retailers must collaborate with suppliers and adopt renewable energy, reduce waste, and transition to sustainable practices. Key areas for improvement include agriculture, energy use, transportation, and packaging. Achieving a 15% reduction by 2030 is feasible with current technologies.
