The high-speed coupling transmits power from the output shaft of the turbine’s gearbox to the input shaft of the generator. If a fault occurs and is not quickly detected, serious damage can occur to the coupling and surrounding components. Challenge To rapidly detect and diagnose any defects in the wind turbine high-speed coupling, allowing prompt action before serious damage can occur. Solution Our condition monitoring system alerted the Brüel & Kjær Vibro Surveillance and Diagnostics Service Centre, who advised the client to take immediate action. Results The wind turbine was stopped before damage was done. Investigation revealed that two of the coupling bolts had loosened themselves free.
