Early detection of slip ring defects can result in a fast, inexpensive repair. However, if the slip ring fault is not corrected at an early stage of development, this could lead to a catastrophic failure, where the generator is destroyed. Challenge To provide condition monitoring and data analysis for a multi-MW wind turbine park following a two-month break in monitoring systems. Solution Bruel & Kjaer Vibro’s data analysis detected increased vibration, which indicated a problem with the generator slip ring, triggering an alarm report. Results Subsequent investigation revealed a requirement to replace the slip ring unit and brushes. This returned the turbine to full operation with no generator failure.
