AI model based on Indian languages connects broader society to technology
Tech Mahindra’s Makers Lab developed Project Indus, a 1.2B parameter open-source LLM built for India, covering Hindi and 37 dialects. It aims to bridge language gaps and make AI accessible to non-English speakers across rural and urban areas. Over 150,000 dialect samples were collected to train the model. Designed to run efficiently on Intel® Xeon® processors without GPUs, it supports applications like financial services, education, and agriculture. With a $400K budget and local community support, Project Indus enables inclusive innovation and digital access across India.
