AI model based on Indian languages connects broader society to technology
Tech Mahindra’s Makers Lab developed Project Indus, an open-source large language model (LLM) trained on Hindi and 37 regional dialects, to bridge India’s language divide in AI access. Built for affordability and accessibility, the model runs efficiently on 5th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors and Intel® AI PCs, eliminating the need for costly GPUs. The initiative collected 150,000+ voice samples from rural communities and delivers competitive NLP performance, processing nearly 34 tokens/second. Applications span education, agriculture, and financial services, empowering rural users to engage with technology in their native dialects and driving inclusive innovation across India.
