Lease or buy? Evaluating the rising costs of truck fleet ownership
KPMG’s 2024 study with Ryder reveals commercial trucking fleet costs have risen sharply—self-reported costs up 14% since 2016, while third-party data shows a 38% increase. Many fleet owners underestimate total cost of ownership (TCO), missing hidden expenses across financing, maintenance, and admin. Class 8 fleet TCO rose from $0.58 to $0.67 per mile. The study found that full-service leasing—covering maintenance, legal, and admin—can save up to 19% versus ownership. KPMG advises a detailed TCO analysis and consideration of economies of scale to decide between leasing or buying under today’s cost pressures.
