Japan Meteorological Agency Improves Linear Precipitation Zone Prediction with New Supercomputer
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) deployed its 11th Gen supercomputer in 2024, built by Fujitsu and powered by Intel® Xeon® CPU Max 9480 processors with 64 GB High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) per CPU. This system is twice as powerful as its predecessor and improves predictions for typhoons and linear precipitation zones—critical for disaster prevention in Japan. The supercomputer reduces node usage by up to 80% for some workloads and supports finer-resolution models and extended forecasts. With improved performance, efficiency, and flexibility, JMA delivers faster, more accurate weather forecasts, aiding in public safety and early warnings.
