THE PROBLEM The Alms Houses were built between 1868 and 1871 and are Grade II listed buildings. Structural Engineers identified that the rear retaining wall was at risk of collapse saying the wall "could fail without further warning signs", causing injury to residents and properties. With the problem also affecting five dwelling houses behind the retaining wall, action had to be taken to stabilise the retaining wall. All eight almshouses are occupied and would be throughout the period of proposed remedial works. THE SOLUTION Protectahome installed forty Cintec ground anchors to a depth of six metres using specialist equipment. The anchor body was based on an M20 stud. A stainless steel weld mesh was then fixed in place using a stainless steel pattress plate.
