THE PROBLEM Witley Court is a ruined country house in Worcestershire under the guardianship of English Heritage. Following a fire in 1937 the house and land were split into auction lots and sold to demolition contractors and timber merchants. After three hundred years of evolution, the grandeur that was Witley Court fell into ruin and decay. Since 1972 work has been taking place to make the building safe for visitors. Over 800 acres of formal gardens have been replanted and fountains restored. Part of the restoration work includes the stabilisation of walls and features of the main house, as well as the surrounding structures. All to exacting standards set out by English Heritage.
