Hospital CHP Case Study THE OPPORTUNITY During the planning of the North Shore Medical Center’s new state-of-the-art central utility plant, the planners took every effort to reduce NSMC’s impact to the environment and create more cost effective energy for the whole campus. Since the old power plant was 100 years old, they knew that this opportunity only came around every century. The design evaluation reviewed many technologies before including a CHP system into the final design. The ability of the CHP system to generate on-site electricity, while also capturing the engine’s heat, enabled NSMC to generate 40 percent of its own electricity.
