HMRC RAPIDLY DEVELOPS DIGITAL SERVICE TO SUPPORT EMPLOYERS
During the COVID-19 pandemic, HMRC, in partnership with Capgemini, rapidly developed the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) to support UK employers in furloughing employees instead of releasing them. The digital service was built in just four weeks, far faster than the typical year-long process. By December 2020, the CJRS had processed over 4.5 million claims, supporting 9.9 million jobs and paying out over £46.4 billion. The project helped stabilize the UK economy by delivering quick financial relief during a time of unprecedented disruption.
