In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, HMRC partnered with Capgemini and other IT collaborators to rapidly develop the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) to provide financial aid to self-employed workers in the UK. Within the first week, the digital service handled 2.1 million applications and disbursed nearly £6.5 billion. Over the first year, SEISS paid over £24.5 billion in grants across 8.8 million claims, supporting 2.8 million individuals. The project was completed in just six weeks through a highly collaborative, agile process, utilizing automated tools and a hybrid cloud system to ensure efficiency and scalability.
