CESCO Protect 1200 A brown stock mill in the Pacific Northwest was experiencing difficulties in making grades that required calendering. Business was being lost because of their inability to make high OCC content calendered grades. Paper machine superintendents were doubtful that the goal could be achieved, because others had failed in their attempts to solve this issue, but skeptically agreed to a trial. The paper machine has 280” trim with a Beloit Concept III headbox and fourdinier. OCC stickies were being deposited in the paper machine’s first dryer section felts, which resulted in sheet defects (i.e. holes, etc.) and lost production due to hay outs and felt cleanup time.
