Poultry Processing Plant Problem A Northwest poultry processor was having difficulty operating its primary wastewater treatment system. The plant was frequently in violation of their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) effluent discharge permit for total dissolved solids (TDS) and biological oxygen demand (BOD). Diagnosis A review of the system by Cesco Solutions, Inc. revealed four problems contributing to poor performance of the wastewater treatment system. The water treatment chemicals were not optimal for complete coagulation and flocculation of suspended solids. The chemical feed systems had no means of control to maintain consistent treatment with varying influent strength. The wastewater handling equipment was poorly engineered to adequately mix treatment chemica
