WHAT ARE ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED SYSTEMS? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), active systems are defined as “actively powered systems using electricity or other fuel source to maintain a temperature-controlled environment inside an insulated enclosure under thermostatic regulations.” Examples of an active system would be refrigerators, temperature-controlled trucks, or temperature-controlled ocean and air containers. The other side of temperature control in the pharmaceutical cold chain is through passive systems.
