Jellyfish’s 2021 State of Engineering Management report highlights three themes: visibility, productivity, and resource allocation. In 2020, teams spent 44% of their time on roadmap and new feature work, but unplanned tasks consumed 17%, far more than leaders’ estimates of 3%. Remote work increased productivity, with more issues resolved, commits, PRs merged, and coding days, though cycle times rose 27%. Leaders struggled with visibility, often overestimating strategic customer work and underestimating unplanned tasks by 81%.
