Decoding the European Mobile Wallet Evolution
Visa’s study shows mobile wallet adoption is accelerating across Europe, driven by convenience, security, and the shift to a cashless society. By 2023, 72% of Europeans were active users, and 32% plan to use wallets exclusively. Nordic countries and Switzerland lead adoption, with Norway at 94%. Consumers typically use 2.4 wallets, balancing global big tech (Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal) with domestic solutions like Swish or MobilePay, valued for P2P features and local trust. Barriers include limited acceptance, compatibility gaps, and security concerns. Future growth lies in “super wallets,” cross-border payments, and wider merchant integration.
