The 2021 Global DDoS Attack Landscape report shows a sharp increase in attack frequency and size, with peaks reaching 2.4 Tbps and attacks over 100 Gbps becoming more common. The gaming industry remained the top target, though attacks expanded to cloud, telecom, and live-streaming sectors. Southeast Asia emerged as a major hotspot, while China accounted for 57% of global bots. Botnets like Mirai, Dofloo, XOR DDoS, and Gafgyt dominated, exploiting 72 vulnerabilities across IoT and Linux systems. Cybercriminals increasingly used ransomware-linked DDoS extortion. Carpet-bombing and hit-and-run attacks rose, with 80% of incidents lasting under five minutes.
