The December 2022 Aite-Novarica Group report examines U.S. consumer credit card ownership and behaviors, finding that 84% of consumers with a financial institution relationship own a major credit card and 52% own a store card. On average, consumers hold 14 financial accounts, including 1.8 major and 1.0 store cards. Thirty-four percent opened a major card and 30% a store card in the past year, with most new accounts issued by national banks or credit card companies. Smartphones dominate application submissions, and major cards are preferred for big-ticket purchases, while debit leads for daily spending. Ownership strongly correlates with income.
