How U.S. Consumers Pay Their Medical Bills
Between 2020 and 2023, U.S. consumers increased their medical bill payments by 25%, with recurring payments totaling $18.9 billion and one-time payments reaching $88.9 billion. The number of medical bills rose 21% to about 490 million. Payment methods shifted notably: credit card payments rose 16% to $30.8 billion, debit card usage grew 45% to $25.3 billion, ACH payments increased 30% to $25.7 billion, and check payments declined to $17.1 billion. Most consumers now favor electronic billing formats. Across all generations and income levels, payment security and speed are the most important factors when selecting how to pay medical bills.
