Route 221 Realignment | Volkert Location: Roanoke County, VA Client: Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) To accommodate traffic increases and improve safety along Route 221 in Roanoke County, VDOT realigned a 0.75-mile segment of the roadway. Volkert provided comprehensive construction management and inspection services for the federally funded, $20-million construction project during 5 phases of construction. The widening of Route 221 from 2 to 4 lanes increased capacity and the new alignment eliminated a dangerous curve. In addition, a new drainage system and 2 new stormwater management ponds improved roadway drainage.
