Oxford Brookes worked with Open Energi and Prefect Controls to unlock flexible capacity from student accommodation. Prefect Controls specialises in energy management systems for buildings with a variable occupancy pattern & helps Oxford Brookes to manage energy consumption from equipment such as heaters and hot water tanks.. Open Energi is able to communicate with this equipment in order to automatically shift energy demand in real-time. Oxford Brookes trialled the technology across 5 water tanks providing hot water to 30 student rooms. Following this success, it signed a 10-year contract to become the first university in the UK to adopt Demand Side Response. The university will now integrate DSR across a total of 71 tanks & 300 panel heaters, representing over 700kW in total.
