The Bay Area’s growing economy has led to the agreement to develop a blended system of Caltrain and high-speed trains sharing the same tracks and serving the Peninsula. Caltrain has undertaken a modernization program, including the first modern electrification of an operating commuter rail corridor in the United States, and the replacement of most of Caltrain’s diesel fleet with state-of-the-art bi-level electric multiple units (EMUs).
