Case Study
Manchester Ship Canal Crossing
Latchford High Level Bridge was built in about 1890 and spans the ship canal about 23m above water level over a distance of about 60m. The steelwork used in the bridge weighs 783 tons, the can lever bridge was apparently built at the say so of Mr Parr, a major shareholder of the ship canal com- pany, so he could drive his horse & carriage straight through from Parrs bank in the town centre to his home in Grappenhall Hayes.
