Carillion were appointed to carry out a series of upgrades at the junctions to improve traffic flow and reduce delays. Van Elle were appointed to install a number of gantry bases requiring 600mm and 750mm diameter bored cast in place piles up to 15m in depth. Lim- ited site investigation had been carried out ahead of the works commencing but due to the range of locations of the gantry bases and large distances between borehole locations highly variable ground conditions were observed.
