Activities that carry this risk include the cutting of kerbstones, stonemasonry, scabbling, surface grinding, tunnelling, laying epoxy floors and carpentry. It is no coincidence that the most prevalent diseases affecting those involved in construction are asbestos-related illnesses, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer and silicosis. According to the Office of National Statistics (1) the incidence of smoking is almost twice as common in routine and manual occupation trades as it is in manager
