Inspecting and Evaluating Amtrak’s Locomotives

Inspecting and Evaluating Amtrak’s Locomotives Extending the lives of locomotives. Amtrak wanted a detailed engineering assessment of its current fleet of General Electric P40 and P42 locomotive carbodies and trucks to determine whether the locomotive carbodies and trucks would last up to 25 additional years of service. LTK’s conducted in-shop inspections and an instrumented road test and provided Amtrak with an analysis and recommendations. For the inspections, we examined 25% of the fleet including trucks, under-body, engine and radiator room, side ladders and doors, overall skin, and internal posts and supports. Once specific parts of the carbody and truck were identified possible problems, LTK proposed that those areas be tested dynamically using sensors, strain gauges, and data acqui
