Adding Life to CT DOT’s Locomotives Old locomotives get new lease on life. Connecticut DOT operates commuter rail service within the state. Fourteen locomotives serving the Shore Line East (SLE) from New Haven to New London required overhaul to extend their service lives. There were two kinds of locomotives: eight P40s from General Electric originally built in 1992 and six GP40s from Electro-Motive Diesel originally built in 1971 and remanufactured in 1996. LTK has managed the work on both types. The P40s are getting a complete overhaul that will rebuild major systems, including the prime mover, main alternator, traction motors, automatic train control, and friction brake.
