The opportunity HDC was formed in 1974 to revive downtown Harrisburg, re-establishing it as the economic and cultural center of the metropolitan area. The nonprofit succeeded in doing so and the downtown thrives to this day. However, two of HDC’s buildings, Strawberry Square and 333 Market Street, still had a 1970s infrastructure and had become in need of modernization. The buildings consist of over 1.8 million sq. ft. of commercial, office and retail space, which includes a 22-story high-rise and public atrium for community and nonprofit events. HDC reached out to PPL Electric Utilities for help.
