Cochrane-Africatown Bridge | Volkert Location: Mobile, AL Client: Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Volkert began initial planning for the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge with the preparation of an engineering feasibility study and an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and saw the award-winning ALDOT project through to its final design. The Cochrane-Africatown Bridge replaced a deteriorating two-lane lift bridge over the Mobile River- a source of delays and safety concerns. The new bridge was designed to enhance traffic mobility and safety with minimal impact on nearby cultural and environmental resources. In addition to the preliminary studies, Volkert provided the preliminary and final designs, including road relocation, approaches, signing, signalization, and lighting. N
