Juniper Networks, ID Quantique, and Deutsche Telekom validated ETSI’s REST-API for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) integrated with MACsec in a multivendor setup. Using AES-256 MACsec encryption, the proof of concept showed QKD-secured key exchange without traffic impact. Findings highlight the need for ETSI and IEEE 802.1X updates to handle key-ID/SAE-ID exchange, define QKD-key use (CAK or SAK), and manage time constraints. Recommendations include failure-handling guidelines, protocol extensions, and buffer strategies to ensure confidentiality, prevent service stalls, and enable interoperable, quantum-safe secure communications.
