From organized crime rings to local neighborhood bad actors, the threat of motor truck cargo theft has remained constant over the years. Driven by the increased dollar values per trailer load, as well as decreasing cargo crime police investigations along with minimal criminal prison sentences in many states for cargo theft, cargo crime can become a real challenge. In order to combat these threats, your organization should develop a “layered” approach to cargo theft which should not only be a formalized and written plan, but management and drivers trained in its use. An overview of this layered approach is presented in this paper and includes management programs, physical truck security and technology solutions.
