Improving access and digital skills for teachers: challenges and opportunities

The Tech4Teachers white paper from the Digital Poverty Alliance highlights persistent digital exclusion among UK teachers. Nearly half lacked suitable technology to teach remotely, leaving ~295,000 educators disadvantaged. Only 17% currently receive training on digital tools, and 24% cite low confidence in digital skills as a barrier. The program supplied 1,750 laptops with support from Intel, Barclays, and Currys, improving planning, flexibility, and digital competence—95% found the devices useful, 80% reported skill gains. Yet, engagement with CPD training was low due to workload pressures. The paper urges stronger policy, integration of digital skills into teacher standards, and leadership-driven digital culture.
