Ransomware has become one of the most damaging cyber threats, costing organizations an average of $4.62 million per breach and increasingly using double or triple extortion tactics. CyberArk Labs analyzed millions of samples, including DarkSide, Conti, and REvil, finding that traditional antivirus often fails as ransomware constantly evolves. Most strains require local admin rights or exploit unknown applications to encrypt files and spread laterally. Testing showed that removing local admin rights combined with greylisting unknown apps blocked 100% of ransomware samples. Enforcing least privilege, securing backups, and tightly controlling application behavior are proven strategies to prevent encryption and data theft.
