This paper explains the EU AI Act, a risk-based regulatory framework that sets mandatory requirements for AI systems in the EU, with direct implications for the APIs that expose and operate those systems. High-risk AI used in areas such as healthcare, infrastructure, and employment must meet strict standards for data governance, accuracy, robustness, cybersecurity, and traceability, making API security a foundational compliance control. APIs must protect data integrity and confidentiality, support logging and oversight, and resist attacks that could alter AI behavior or availability. With penalties reaching €35 million or 7% of global revenue, the Act positions strong API governance as essential to lawful deployment, market access, and building trust in AI services.
