Harsh Climate And Its Significance In Embedded IoT Environments
Embedded IoT devices are revolutionizing industries, but harsh climates present major deployment challenges. This paper examines failures in desert agriculture and Arctic monitoring, where extreme temperatures, dust, static electricity, and ice led to device breakdowns due to insufficient environmental testing and weak protective design. Lessons include the need for robust enclosures, ESD protection, and comprehensive risk assessment. In contrast, a successful mining deployment in the Australian Outback using Advantech's ARK-2251 showcased the importance of resilient design, temperature and dust resistance, and adaptive power handling, setting a benchmark for reliable IoT in extreme environments.
