The 2023 NSFOCUS Botnet Trends report reveals a surge in botnet-driven cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure, with Mirai, XorDDoS, and Gafgyt leading activity. China and the U.S. were the most affected regions, while education and energy sectors suffered the most. Mirai controlled 33% of infected IoT devices and issued 83% of attack commands, mostly UDP floods. Emerging families like hailBot and Pikabot showed strong growth, and groups such as Gang123 and Rapper expanded into DDoS and mining. Predictions for 2024 include intensified botnet integration with APTs and ransomware, stronger anti-tracking tactics, and higher stealth in cross-platform attacks.
