The 2022 State of the Java Ecosystem report from New Relic shows Java 11 overtaking Java 8 as the most-used version, with Java 17 adoption beginning. Java 14 leads among non-LTS versions. Oracle’s JDK dominance has dropped from ~75% to about half, while Amazon’s share rose to 22%. Over 70% of Java apps run in containers, mostly on small compute setups (1–4 cores) and with modest memory footprints. G1 is the preferred garbage collector beyond Java 8, with minimal adoption of ZGC or Shenandoah. The report highlights continued modernization, containerization, and a shift toward open-source JDK distributions.
