During the COVID-19 pandemic, while employees worked remotely, IoT malware attacks surged by 700% on corporate networks. Entertainment and home automation devices, though only 5% of IoT traffic, posed the highest risks due to lack of encryption and routing data to suspicious destinations like China and Russia. The most common malware families were Gafgyt, Mirai, and Tsunami, with compromised devices primarily sending data back to servers in China, the U.S., and India. The technology, manufacturing, and retail sectors were most affected. To defend against IoT threats, organizations should manage devices, change default passwords, apply updates, and implement a zero trust architecture.
