Using Statistical Process Control in Preventive Maintenance

Statistical Process Control (SPC) helps manufacturers cut maintenance costs by using sensor-based data and control charts to detect early shifts in process stability before failures occur. When control limits sit inside product specifications, SPC can flag equipment needing preventive maintenance even while output remains in spec. Because machines often can’t measure product quality directly, SPC monitors process attributes—flows, pressures, temperatures, voltages, speeds—and compares actual vs. expected values. PDF Solutions’ Cimetrix CIMControlFramework uses SPC-driven HealthIndicators to visualize equipment health, enable proactive maintenance, and reduce downtime.
