Introduced in 1986, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) allowed the first digital trans-missions to use the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Since that time various hybrid solutions to increase capacity and speeds have emerged, all focused around ISDN — the business gold standard of digital connectivity for decades, as the early internet emerged. But although the lines themselves have been upgraded since, the technology behind them remains a piecemeal tangle of upgrades essentially dependent on infrastructure from the 1980s.
