Solving the unsolvable: How scientists are using supercomputers and AI to address our most urgent crises
Scientists are leveraging supercomputers and AI to tackle urgent global challenges, including the search for habitable exoplanets. In January 2024, NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) detected a potentially habitable super-Earth 137 light-years away. Data from TESS was processed by NASA’s Pleiades supercomputer, performing millions of calculations to analyze the planet’s size, composition, and habitability. Additionally, NASA’s deep neural network, ExoMiner, running on Pleiades, has validated hundreds of exoplanets by distinguishing real planets from false positives, accelerating discoveries and expanding our understanding of the cosmos.
