While working with contractors presents some great benefits, it also poses significant challenges for most asset-intensive industries. This is particularly true in STOs, where up to 80% of the cost, personnel and safety risks are in the hands of the multiple contractors. Almost by definition, the motivation and drivers of contractors are very different to those of owner-operators. Insufficiently familiar and often lacking the big picture of the facility where the STO is being performed, contractor productivity can be low. Furthermore, the support of contractors in the execution of work can raise a range of other issues.
