WHITNEY MUSEUM SYNOPSIS: The Whitney Museum of American Art was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930 and opened to the public in November of 1931. For most of its existence, the museum was located in Manhattan’s Upper East Side (1966 to October of 2014). In May 2015, a new location was introduced to the public at 99 Gansevoort Street, New York, New York in the West Village/Meatpacking District. The new building (200,000 sq. feet & 8 stories, including 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space) was designed by Renzo Piano and took approximately 5 years to complete - at a cost of $422 million.
