Using Simulation Technology to Reduce Weight and Improve Safety of Child Restraint Systems

Pages 4 Pages

Britax-Römer partnered with Altair to improve safety performance while reducing the weight of its child restraint systems. Using Altair HyperWorks and OptiStruct, engineers applied topology optimization to redesign critical components of the Baby Safe Sleeper and later the Trifix seat. Simulation enabled early validation of structural performance, reducing reliance on physical prototypes. The optimized design achieved a 1.8 kg weight reduction while improving side-impact performance and meeting cost targets. The project shortened development cycles, reduced manufacturing complexity, and helped Britax-Römer win industry innovation and design awards, reinforcing simulation-driven development as a core engineering strategy.
