For therapist Janet Dyer, the COVID-19 pandemic represented a significant risk – not just to her patients and her practice – but – to her personal health, as well. As an immunocompromised person herself, she needed to ensure that she could protect her own health through the pandemic so that she could continue to provide much-needed mental health care for her patients. Roughly 20 patients per week have depended on Dyer for mental health therapy for the past two-and-a-half years. Facing a nationwide mental health crisis, she didn’t even consider closing her doors – despite being physically vulnerable herself.
