Blackbourne were part of the McLaughlin & Harvey construction team for the new £120million Critical Care Building at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. The Royal is Northern Ireland’s premier acute hospital site, treating over 80,000 inpatients and 350,000 outpatients every year and provides over a fifth of the acute beds in NI. With a floor area of 28,856m 2 over 12 levels, the building now includes operating theatres, intensive care unit, maternity wards, A&E department, regional burns unit and support facilities. The foot- print of the new critical care building overlapped the existing McAfee lecture theatre and more important- ly the existing substation, with HV ring main units, transformers, LV switchboard and 800kVA standby generator.
