ST Engineering partnered with Nikon SLM Solutions to tackle supply chain and performance challenges in marine propulsion by 3D printing closed impellers using Aheadd® CP1 aluminum alloy. The new approach significantly cut lead times (over 90%), enhanced corrosion resistance, and improved efficiency in harsh marine environments. Free Float technology enabled geometry optimization with minimal support structures. Compared to AlSi10Mg, Aheadd® CP1 offers better strength and thermal performance, supporting the maritime industry’s shift toward lightweight, sustainable materials. This collaboration showcases the transformative impact of additive manufacturing on marine innovation.
